Tocllaraju, with its 6034m is the eighteenth highest mountain in the Cordillera Blanca.

It is one of the most climbed mountains in the Cordillera Blanca, but not always conquered due to the presence of fog, cracks and precipices. Its summit was conquered on July 31, 1939 by German mountaineers.

The closest city to the ascent is Huaraz, about 30 km. to the north. Currently the most used access is between the towns of Collon, Pashpa or Honcopampa.

Note:

  • In our itinerary we can calculate one more day to take a break, for any emergency such as weather, a health problem or to climb the snowy Quitaraju.

  • We recommend 3 to 4 days of acclimatization. This will allow you to fully Discover and Enjoy Alpamayo!

Itinerary:

We start this beautiful expedition in Huaraz from your hotel and then drive to the typical and picturesque town of Collondonde. As for all the expeditions, we will meet one of our muleteers and his donkeys who will be in charge of transporting all the equipment and food to the base camp.

After quickly discovering the town and its friendly inhabitants, we will begin our walk entering one of the beautiful valleys, “Ishinca” with abundant vegetation, accompanied by the river of the same name and surrounded by spectacular mountains. After a few hours we will arrive at the camp with all the team., As always upon arrival the camp will be set up.

Walking time: 5 to 6 hours approximately.

Approximate difference in altitude: 950 m ascent.

After spending a nice night surrounded by beautiful snow-capped mountains and a hearty Andean breakfast and then packing all the climbing and camping equipment, plus necessary food, we will start our adventure heading towards the base of Tocllaraju, We will head directly up to the moraine field and if the conditions allow it, up to the basecamp. All this section with include help from the expert porters.

Walking time: 5 to 6 hours approximately.

Approximate difference in altitude: 800 m of ascent.

Very early, after a hot drink, around 12:00 to 1:00 a.m. we will begin the ascent by the classic route the Northwest route. This road is the most ascended due to its technical ease; after overcoming an ice wall of about 100 meters and with an inclination of 60 to 70 degrees we will reach the summit. After delighting our eyes and the lens of our camera with the panoramic and spectacular view of the valleys of Cojup, Ishinca, Honda and the snowy Ranrapalca, Ishinca, Palcaraju and many others, we will go down the same route to base camp to rest and celebrate.

Climbing and walking time: 10-11 hours approximately.

Approximate difference in altitude: 934 m up and  1734 m down.

After this feat and having regained strength we will begin our walk, on an easy path surrounded by vegetation, and mountain ranges, to the small lagoon called Cochapampa, where we will take the transport to return to Huaraz.

Walking time: 4 to 5 hours approximately.

Approximate difference in altitude: 650 m of descent.
