This route is a place full of tradition, living culture, valleys and incredible treks.

It is not a busy place; so, we will be able to spend unforgettable moments with the local people who you will find will be very surprised and happy to see us.

The Cordillera Huayhuash is probably the most impressive trek in the Peruvian Andes. Six of its peaks are above 6,000 meters and another fifteen reach 5,400 meters.  The Huayhuash is the second highest tropical mountain range in the world behind the Cordillera Blanca. It has a variety of ecosystems and great potential as a travel destination thanks to its incomparable and panoramic views. Lagoons like Sacracocha, Soltesxzarococha and Jahuacocha, are of incredible beauty, intersecting whilst we walk through the valleys full of rich and diverse wildlife.

  • The direction of the itinerary can be reversed according to the availability of the mountain assistants.

Itinerary:

We will start our expedition in one of our minibuses, to the South of Hauraz, passing by the Conococha Lagoon and its ducks, the town of Chiquian and finally to the town of Quero, where we will start our adventure, with the help of donkeys who are in charge of carrying all our luggage. The road winds through the valley between a eucalyptus forest, surrounded by farms offering products such as potatoes, quinoa, avas, wheat and much more; At the end of the valley we will arrive at one of the few towns that has  preserved its tradition and culture in Peru, called MAHUAY, a town with narrow streets, paved with rocks from the area, adobe walls and a red roof with the tiles made by its settlers.

Once our camp is erected, you will participate in the preparation of a stone oven, after heating with firewood we bury the ingredients such as meat, potatoes, sweet potatoes, avas, corn, goose and many others. After 40 minutes we will open it, to taste the rich and delicious “Pachamanca”, which is always accompanied by a typical drink.

Walking time: 4 to 5 hours approximately.

Approximate difference in altitude: 400 m. going up.

After breakfast, we will walk the narrow streets of Mahuay, then we will go into the Huallanca Mountain Range and in the valley called Panash, surrounded by trees such as the Quenual, Quishuar and others After having lunch next to the Panash river, with crystal waters, we will continue slowly climbing a barely-visible path towards our next camp located next to the Sacracocha Lagoon at 4480 m.

Walking time: 6 to 7 hours approximately.

Approximate difference in altitude: 1030 m. going up.

After spending the night and having a nutritious breakfast, we will continue our adventure walking through a small valley that allows us to climb little by little towards the Sacred Pass, passing through the small forests of quenuales (typical tree of the area), temporary houses of the shepherdesses and their sheep and along a path not visible. After approximately 1 hour we will get to enjoy a unique view of the Cordillera Huayhuash and Huallanca, which the Paso Sacra offers, where we will stop to enjoy the view of Yerupaja, from an angle that is unique. Then we will go down to our next camp known as Matacancha, next to a crystal-clear river, where you can take a cold but refreshing bath.

Walking time: 4 to 5 hours approximately.

Approximate difference in altitude: 120m uphill and 380m. down.

After breakfast we will start our descent towards the Rondoy Valley. Upon reaching the base we will begin to climb towards the Rondoy Pass, which offers a spectacular view of both the Rondoy and Jahuacocha Valleys. Following lunch, we will continue on another alternate route heading to the viewpoint of Minapata, that allows you to obtain a panoramic and spectacular view of the valley, lagoons, rivers and its impressive snow-capped mountains such as Rondoy, Hirishinca, Ninashanca, Yerupaja, Siula, Rasac, Huacrish and Diablo Mudo. Then we will continue down to the Jahuacocha Lagoon where our cook will be waiting with a hot drink.

Walking time: 6 to 7 hours approximately.

Approximate difference in altitude: 660 m and 694 m. down.

As everything in life ends, our adventure in the Huayhuash is also over. After breakfast we will start our ascent to the Pampa Llamac Pass that allows us to take the last look at the majestic Huayhuash Mountain Range. After taking the last photos we will continue down to the town of Llamac where we will take a bus and return to Huaraz, arrival time approximately 5:00 pm

Approximate difference in altitude: 234 m and 1000 m. down.

  • Flashlight: front or handheld plus extra battery.
